Top 3 Tips For Storing Bread

Lois Young

If you notice that Klosterman Baking Company or a company nearby is having an amazing sale, there is a good chance that you stocked up on bread so that you won't have to buy it for awhile. However, you might not know the absolute best way to store your bread so that it doesn't get moldy or stale. You want to be sure that you are able to maintain the taste of the bread in order to make your purchase worthwhile. Here are some tips for making sure that you are able to store your bread and keep it tasting great.

1. Freeze It

The first thing that you want to do is calculate how much bread you are going to be eating within the next three-to-five days. Put this in a separate, sealed bag. Take whatever is left and put it in the freezer. You want to freeze the bread in order to protect its flavor and keep mold from forming. If you bought a ton of bread, consider breaking it into the amount that you would eat in three-to-five days and store each of these chunks of bread separately in your freezer. Then, when it comes time for you to retrieve the bread in the freezer, you can either let it thaw overnight or you can put it in the oven.

2. Avoid Storing Bread on Top of the Refrigerator

Now that you've separated out the bread that you are going to eat within the next few days and the bread that you are going to freeze, you will need to figure out how to store that former group of bread. The main thing that you want to avoid is storing your bread near any heat source, such as the oven or the top of the refrigerator. The reason for this is that it will cause the aging process of the bread to accelerate and for it to get stale more quickly.

3. Store Your Bread Out of Direct Sunlight

Finally, be sure that you are storing your bread out of direct sunlight because the direct sunlight can result in your bread heating up and aging more quickly. Storing your bread in a cabinet or underneath a cloth and out of the way of the window can help it stay a little bit cooler.

You don't have to throw away that extra bread if you take the correct actions early on. Feel free to stock up when those deals come around!

About Me
Understanding Proper Cooking Skills

I have always loved to cook, but about six months ago I realized that there were some serious deficiencies in my cooking skills. It seemed like no matter how hard I tried to perfect my cooking, I was always falling short. My souffles were never quite high enough, my roasts were always a little burned, and it seemed like I was having a lot of trouble getting the presentation quite right. I started attending a continuing education class that focused on food and cooking, and it was really insightful. This blog is here for any home cook that feels like they need to hone their skills.
