Skip The Protein Shake And Grab Lunch At A Mexican Restaurant After Your Workout

Lois Young

After a heavy workout at the gym, most people head for a protein shake. It's a quick and easy way to get a sizeable amount of protein. However, it's just protein. While your muscles need protein, it's also important to get carbs and healthy fats from food. For this reason, it's a good idea to not try and subsist solely your protein shakes. One great way to get healthy fats, carbs, and protein is to hit a Mexican restaurant for lunch. But not all meals will be beneficial for a post-workout. You want protein and healthy fat, along with some carbs. But the dish should not be mostly carbs. Here are a few suggestions.

Guacamole

Not only does guacamole taste delicious, but it's also very healthy. It's a fantastic source of healthy fats. You need to have fat, but it's best to get it from healthy foods such as nuts, olive oil, and avocados (the main ingredient in guacamole). For bodybuilders, avocados are important because they can help to naturally boost testosterone.

Frijoles Negros

Mexican black beans are a fanatic source of protein for vegetarians. The beans are cooked with spices, including garlic, cumin, and chili peppers. The beans are also a great source of fiber. That's important if you're used to drinking lots of protein shakes during the day. You need to have fiber in your diet, and beans are a fantastic way to get that fiber. The black beans are often served with rice and a sliced lime to add as garnish.

Carne Asada

This dish is made by grilling skirt steak, then slicing it thin and serving it in a taco or with a side of grilled vegetables. The steak is a great source of protein, and the vegetables provide you with lots of vitamins and fiber. The taco isn't even a problem since it is corn and provides you with carbs. Carbs are not bad in and of themselves, so don't think that you have to avoid the taco.

Horchata

A nice alternative to a margarita, beer, or soda is a classic Mexican drink called horchata. It's made with either rice or almonds. The rice or almonds are soaked in water, spices such as cinnamon are added, and vanilla is also added. You will avoid the sugar and artificial colors that you find in soda (provided that no extra sugar is added), plus the alcohol from beer and margaritas, which might not be what you want after a big workout.

So the next time you're looking for a great post-workout meal, head on over to Mexican restaurants in tucson az.

About Me
Understanding Proper Cooking Skills

I have always loved to cook, but about six months ago I realized that there were some serious deficiencies in my cooking skills. It seemed like no matter how hard I tried to perfect my cooking, I was always falling short. My souffles were never quite high enough, my roasts were always a little burned, and it seemed like I was having a lot of trouble getting the presentation quite right. I started attending a continuing education class that focused on food and cooking, and it was really insightful. This blog is here for any home cook that feels like they need to hone their skills.
